Courageous Creations JUNE 12-17, 2022 UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN COLORADO CAMPUS
Reflections from the week by Cystal Hinds
Even though I am not great with clay, I felt that my contribution was needed and accepted as part of the whole. This sense of belonging and creating something together is what I would like to incorporate in my classroom environments. I teach a variety of materials and methods and in different rooms. To me it is important that each and every child that walks through my door feels welcome and that their contribution is important to creating the environment. To nurture and empower each student in using their inner voice to communicate with the world.
Something that Yazmin said during her presentation just stuck with me throughout my process, “I just trust my hand and my glue and go.” This really speaks to me as an artist because my process is generally very organic, trusting the materials and process. All things inherently know what they want to be, sometimes they just need a conversation with other things to realize their potential.
One of my take-aways from this experience is how valuable studio time really is, for my students and for me...Sitting with this realization, I reconsider how I am using and creating studio time in my classrooms.
